This morning, Microsoft rebooted my computer (for my safety) and once again I lost some valuable notes.<\/p>\n<p>I remember writing about this once before before, so I looked through my own blog or reference of how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/computers-how-to\/stop-xp-automatic-reboot-after-windows-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\">stop these irritating XP automatic reboots<\/a>, and once I found the instructions, I saw that my directions were lacking info for people that might not know how to get to the &#8220;Group Policy Editor&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So if you have Windows XP service pack 2 \u00a0here is exactly how to stop this annoying Microsoft morning reboot after a Windows update:<\/p>\n<p><strong>First you have to start the group policy editor &#8211; <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Start &#8211; Run &#8211; and type mmc  &#8211; then hit Enter.<\/li>\n<li> Go to File &#8211; Add\/Remove Snap in and hit ADD. (in XP Pro SP3, I could not do this &#8211; see alternate instructions below the first photo)<\/li>\n<li> Under Available Stand-alone Snap-ins, click Group Policy, and then click Add, then finish to edit your local machine.s browse to the Windows update section and make a change &#8211;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Simply browse under the local computer policy to this path &#8211; local computer policy\\computer configuration\\administrative templates\\Windows components\\Windows update.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"stop-auto-reboot-image\" rel=\"lightbox[pics713]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stop-auto-reboot1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-715 centered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stop-auto-reboot1.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"stop-auto-reboot-image\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>*Update 2\/2010 In Windows XP Pro SP3<\/strong>, here are some different instructions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<ul>\n<li>In the Start Menu go to &#8220;Run&#8221; \u00a0then type \u201cgpedit.msc\u201d and press Enter<\/li>\n<li>Group Policy opens<\/li>\n<li>In that window, go to: Computer Configuration -&gt; Administrative Template -&gt; Windows Components -&gt; Windows Update<\/li>\n<li>Double click on &#8220;No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In the settings window Choose Enabled and click OK<\/li>\n<li>Close Group Policy Editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Change your <strong>&#8220;No auto restart for scheduled automatic update installations&#8221;<\/strong> to &#8220;Enabled&#8221; by double-clicking on it on the right side.\u00a0  Save everything and reboot, and you&#8217;re good to go.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"stop-auto-reboot2\" rel=\"lightbox[pics713]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stop-auto-reboot2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-716 centered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stop-auto-reboot2.jpg\" alt=\"stop-auto-reboot2\" width=\"425\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>(When you close the &#8220;group policy editor&#8221; it will ask you if you want to save and yes I did, with the default location and file name)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>PS<\/strong> &#8211; While I was in there, I poked around hoping to enable something like <strong>&#8220;no crashing software while in use&#8221;<\/strong> but I couldn&#8217;t find it.
