{"id":654,"date":"2008-03-26T21:20:19","date_gmt":"2008-03-27T04:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/computers-how-to\/stump-the-geek-whats-wrong\/"},"modified":"2014-12-04T13:37:14","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:37:14","slug":"stump-the-geek-whats-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/computers-how-to\/stump-the-geek-whats-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"Stump the Geek &#8211; What&#8217;s Wrong?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a board member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.occa.org\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon Computer Consultants Association<\/a> and at each monthly meeting, there&#8217;s a few minutes where  people ask questions about strange behavior, and get help from their peers.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the meeting was last night (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.occa.org\/view-board-postings\/5879.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Lee from Intel<\/a>) , and I had nothing to ask, but TODAY is another matter. The following message just went out to the entire group &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Hi everyone &#8211; Here&#8217;s my Stump the Geek question&#8230;<br \/>\nI rebooted my computer this AM and went snowboarding.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I came home and it said \u201cWindows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt\u2026&#8221; etc. \u2013 <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o> <\/o>So, I hit the arrow key, and got an instant reboot, instead of allowing me to choose \u201clast known config&#8221; or Safe Mode, or anything.<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o><\/o>It just booted up to where it says, \u201cboot from CD\u201d and sits there. <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o>I put in my <\/o>Windows CD, booted off it, and attempted a repair installation, but the C:\/ Windows installation is not found. <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p>Assuming I had a bad C drive, I disconnected all drives, took the C out, added a brand new C, and partially installed Windows clean \u2013 <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o>After <\/o>one of the reboots at install, now I get this \u2013 <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.<br \/>\nCould not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.<br \/>\nPlease check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.<o><\/o>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o> <\/o>So I got <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/314477\" target=\"_blank\">here to my issue on Microsoft support<\/a> &#8211; <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unfortunately, I cant edit anything like that says, since I can&#8217;t even remember any Dos commands (not that I knew many) and figured I\u2019d just try a NEW clean windows install, but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">NOWI can\u2019t even <span> <\/span>get it to boot again from the CD. <span> <\/span>it just skips past now matter how many times I <span> <\/span>actually press any key to boot from CD. <span> <\/span>It then jumps right to that same message. <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">My keyboard works fine to go into the bios, and FYI, this is Windows XP on a dual core Intel chip, on an Intel 965 chipset board, 4 gigs of ram<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o><\/o>I found someone else having the exact same problem back in 2006,  &#8211; Partial Windows install, then stuck unable to boot from CD with my same message &#8211; <span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/forums.whirlpool.net.au\/forum-replies-archive.cfm\/598936.html\" target=\"_blank\">but the thread had no resolution <\/a>\u2013<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m lucky I have all my data on the F drive, and even backed up too on a USB drive, so I just need @#$%ing Windows and Office installed, AV etc. <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At 9am tomorrow, I\u2019m carrying it somewhere, (maybe the side of the Broadway Bridge) unless someone has any ideas for me, \u2018cause I\u2019ve had it.<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"_MailAutoSig\" name=\"_MailAutoSig\"><\/a><strong><span style=\"font-size: 7.5pt; font-family: 'Tahoma','sans-serif'\"><\/span><\/strong><span><span><o><\/o><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a board member of the Oregon Computer Consultants Association and at each monthly meeting, there&#8217;s a few minutes where people ask questions about strange behavior, and get help from their peers.
