{"id":286,"date":"2006-10-02T10:35:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-02T17:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/archives\/286"},"modified":"2014-12-04T13:45:50","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:45:50","slug":"raid-hard-drive-arrays-made-simple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/computers-how-to\/raid-hard-drive-arrays-made-simple\/","title":{"rendered":"RAID Hard Drive Arrays Made Simple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Someone sent me this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sickedank.com\/raid.jpg\">illustrated RAID example<\/a> that I just had to share&#8230; \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>The RAID (<span id=\"intelliTxt\"><em><strong>R<\/strong>edundant <strong>A<\/strong>rray of <strong>I<\/strong>ndependent<\/em><\/span><span id=\"intelliTxt\"><em> <strong>D<\/strong>isks<\/em><\/span><span id=\"intelliTxt\"><em>) <\/em><\/span>defintions below are from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webopedia.com\/TERM\/R\/RAID.html\">WikiPedia<\/a>, and they&#8217;re pretty good&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"intelliTxt\">There are number of different RAID levels:<\/span><\/p>\n<menu>\n<li><strong>Level 0 &#8212; Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance:<\/strong> Provides <em>data striping<\/em> (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance. If one drive fails then all <a target=\"_blank\" style=\"border-bottom: 0.075em solid darkgreen; font-weight: normal; font-size: 100%; text-decoration: underline; background-color: transparent; padding-bottom: 1px\" class=\"iAs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webopedia.com\/TERM\/R\/RAID.html#\">data<\/a> in the array is lost.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 1 &#8212; Mirroring and Duplexing:<\/strong> Provides <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webopedia.com\/TERM\/R\/disk_mirroring.html\">disk mirroring<\/a>. Level 1 provides twice the read transaction rate of single disks and the same write transaction rate as single disks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 2 &#8212; Error-Correcting Coding:<\/strong> Not a typical implementation and rarely used, Level 2 stripes data at the bit level rather than the block level.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 3 &#8212; Bit-Interleaved Parity:<\/strong> Provides byte-level striping with a dedicated parity disk. Level 3, which cannot service simultaneous multiple requests, also is rarely used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 4 &#8212; Dedicated Parity Drive:<\/strong> A commonly used implementation of RAID, Level 4 provides block-level striping (like Level 0) with a parity disk. If a data disk fails, the parity data is used to create a replacement disk. A disadvantage to Level 4 is that the parity disk can create write bottlenecks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 5 &#8212; Block Interleaved Distributed Parity:<\/strong> Provides data striping at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance. Level 5 is one of the most popular implementations of RAID.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 6 &#8212; Independent Data Disks with Double Parity:<\/strong> Provides block-level striping with parity data distributed across all disks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 0+1 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A Mirror of Stripes:<\/strong> Not one of the original RAID levels, two RAID 0 stripes are created, and a RAID 1 mirror is created over them.
