{"id":2099,"date":"2010-11-23T08:12:51","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T15:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/?p=2099"},"modified":"2014-12-04T13:16:26","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:16:26","slug":"5-questions-matt-cutts-pubcon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/google\/5-questions-matt-cutts-pubcon\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Questions Matt Was Not Asked at Pubcon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcutts.com\/blog\/say-hello-at-pubcon-2010\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Cutts<\/a> is the head of Google&#8217;s Webspam team, and each year in the past, he&#8217;s been a participant in the &#8220;search engine smackdown&#8221; at Pubcon.<\/p>\n<p>This year he had the stage all to himself, and I was in the second row for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pubcon.com\/sessions.cgi?action=view&amp;conference=pubcon27&amp;record=329\" target=\"_blank\">session<\/a> as he talked about the current state of Google, and about where they are going in the future, \u00a0and then I just sat idly by while he took some Q&amp;A from the audience.<\/p>\n<p>As always, Matt covered a lot, and there&#8217;s some great coverage of the session at places like <a href=\"http:\/\/outspokenmedia.com\/internet-marketing-conferences\/super-session\/\" target=\"_blank\">Outspoken Media<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/key-takeaways-from-googles-matt-cutts-talk-at-pubcon-55457\" target=\"_blank\">Search Engine Land<\/a>, and even an interesting mix of live blogging and chat at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/archives\/023229.html\" target=\"_blank\">Search Engine Roundtable<\/a>, but I thought I&#8217;d write down a few questions that I wish I had asked&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0Why are certain industries (like ours) being excluded from localization? <\/strong> These industries rarely if ever show any local results, and this dates all the way back to the \u00a07 pack, 10 pack and even earlier<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Web hosting<\/li>\n<li>Web design<\/li>\n<li>software programming<\/li>\n<li>Internet marketing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I suppose there&#8217;s an argument to be made that all these services can be done online, but often people really are looking for local help, like a web host in their home town, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/internet-marketing-portland-or.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2107  aligncenter\" title=\"internet-marketing-portland-or\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/internet-marketing-portland-or-300x165.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/internet-marketing-portland-or-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/internet-marketing-portland-or.jpg 963w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The speculation I&#8217;ve read is something akin to: &#8220;Too many SEO&#8217;s were abusing the system, and found it easy to game&#8221; or similar reasons, but I find that hard to believe, considering you still allow the locksmith industry to remain localized.<\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s the deal? Why are our industries being singled out?<br \/>\n<strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Why are there still so many inconsistencies from city to city and phrase to phrase<\/strong> in these new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/google\/google-merging-organic-and-local\/\" target=\"_blank\">merged search results<\/a>? At Pubcon it was about two weeks into it, and now they&#8217;ve been live for a month, yet they&#8217;re still a bit wacky.<\/p>\n<p>For example, search &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/#sclient=psy&amp;hl=en&amp;q=mechanical+bull+rental+in+scottsdale&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;oq=&amp;gs_rfai=&amp;pbx=1&amp;uul_counter=1&amp;fp=1&amp;cad=b\" target=\"_blank\">mechanical bull rental in Scottsdale<\/a>&#8221; \u00a0vs. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/#sclient=psy&amp;hl=en&amp;q=mechanical+bull+rental+in+phoenix&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;oq=&amp;gs_rfai=&amp;pbx=1&amp;fp=8bc48c66f0d3c525\" target=\"_blank\">mechanical bull rental in Phoenix<\/a> , and see how differently they appear!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-scottsdale1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2106\" title=\"mech-bull-scottsdale\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-scottsdale1-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-scottsdale1-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-scottsdale1.jpg 882w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-phoenix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2105\" title=\"mech-bull-phoenix\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-phoenix-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-phoenix-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mech-bull-phoenix.jpg 876w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Why should the composition be different? There are likely similar per-capita searches by people wanting some <a href=\"http:\/\/raventools.com\/blog\/12-lessons-from-pubcon\/\" target=\"_blank\">cowboy fun<\/a> in either city, and just as many service providers, so it makes no sense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For that particular phrase, Scottsdale is devoid of any localaization, while Phoenix has been completely converted. Other phrases though, such as &#8220;event planning&#8221; demonstrate that it&#8217;s\u00a0s not a &#8220;city by city&#8221; thing, but rather &#8220;phase by phrase&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Without getting too technical, how do we explain this sort of absurd inconsistency to a layperson \/ client who is coming to use for answers?<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Why is Google Webmaster Tools not consistently sending malware notifications to site owners when malware is found?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a WMT account with multiple domains, we&#8217;ve had to click into the domain before noticing any malware warning stripe, or seeing any notification message at all.<\/p>\n<p>In the past two months I&#8217;ve written about it twice, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sempdx.org\/blog\/google\/google-killing-us-missing-notifications\/\" target=\"_blank\">once at SEMpdx<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/google\/google-missing-malware-notifications\/\" target=\"_blank\">once here<\/a>, and I&#8217;ve sent in messages to Webmaster Tools that have gone unanswered. I&#8217;ve Tweeted a bit, and had some folks reply with &#8220;Us too! We thought somethign was up&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway &#8211; this seems important&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Why did Google take away such a valuable research tool? <\/strong>Marketers the world over are mourning the loss (<a href=\"https:\/\/adwords.google.com\/select\/KeywordToolExternal\" target=\"_blank\">in the Adwords Keyword tool<\/a>)\u00a0of the SIMPLE ability to get approximate impression counts on a batch of phrases that WE paste without the &#8220;suggestions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/google-kwtool.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2109\" title=\"google-kwtool\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/google-kwtool-300x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/google-kwtool-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/google-kwtool.jpg 641w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While there&#8217;s certainly always room for innovation, and the tool has gotten better, sometimes we don&#8217;t WANT \u00a0phrases added, removed, suggested, etc. and we just want the facts as we deem them necessary.  Can we PLEASE get it<br \/>\nback?<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
