{"id":2031,"date":"2010-09-20T10:30:07","date_gmt":"2010-09-20T17:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/?p=2031"},"modified":"2014-12-04T13:16:27","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:16:27","slug":"years-of-seo-in-an-email","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/seo-101\/years-of-seo-in-an-email\/","title":{"rendered":"Years of SEO in an Email"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you politely explain years and years of progress in SEO to someone that you know is either reading very old information, or is just completely misinformed?<\/p>\n<p>If you read the email I got below, that&#8217;s what I was faced with, and I answered for the benefit of a current client (potentially getting him a backlink or three? \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>John (my client) had an old friend get in touch with him, wanting a link from their site.<\/p>\n<p>John emailed his friend back, and cc&#8217;d me.<\/p>\n<p>As I read the email, I realized that Johns friend was either reading 8 year old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmasterworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Webmaster World<\/a> posts, or he was being seriously misinformed by some sort of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reelseo.com\/video-marketing-seo-posers\/\" target=\"_blank\">SEO poser<\/a>*, so I figured I could try to bring him up to speed quickly, and hopefully help both of our sites in the process.<\/p>\n<p>After I sent it, I thought it would make a pretty decent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/seo101\" target=\"_blank\">SEO 101<\/a> blog post, so here it is, with only the domain names and identifying personal innformation [snip] &#8216;d out.<\/p>\n<p>)Like an e-mail, read from the bottom up&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scotts reply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David,<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations on the web success you\u2019ve had, and yes, sure, we can probably benefit each other for visibility.<\/p>\n<p>However, this type of \u201creciprocal linking\u201d has very limited value, and just as important <em>is the actual phrase<\/em> that is linked, called the \u201canchor text\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For example, If we were to link to you with the words \u201c[snip keyphrase]\u201d you would rank better for that, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from contextual relevance, it\u2019s also FAR more beneficial to have the link appear in the actual reference area, or the \u201cmain body\u201d of a page, as opposed to the sides or the bottom, where it\u2019s just a link \/ advertisement.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also not nearly as advantageous to have the link be on a page with a bunch of other links either,  and while nether \u201cmethod\u201d is totally devoid of value, Google has been discounting those for a few years now.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the fact that a contextual link is best, a great strategy among partners is to write an article, or \u201cguest post\u201d and put it on each others sites.<\/p>\n<p>Keep it topical, and relevant, and useful to the reader, and it can help provide a long term trust factor for your domain.<\/p>\n<p>For example, here\u2019s one that was provided to us by [snip] in California, &#8211; http:\/\/[snip]\/<br \/>\nAnd here\u2019s one that was done by a [snip] in Colorado &#8211; http:\/\/[snip]\/<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll be happy to put one up with a couple of links, and we\u2019ll provide one back to you in exchange.<br \/>\n(and if you do want a sidebar link too, we\u2019ll be happy to reciprocate there as well \u2013 they do still have SOME value)<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of one we would send you\u2026<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.[snip].htm<br \/>\n(although we\u2019d not send something related to Colorado \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Please let me know what you decide, and shall I assume we can send you one to put on your site?<\/p>\n<p>Scott Hendison<br \/>\nSEO Automatic<br \/>\nSearch Commander, Inc.<br \/>\n877.241.4453<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>From: John [My client]<\/strong><br \/>\nSent: Friday, September 17, 2010 12:15 PM<br \/>\nTo: David<br \/>\nCc: Scott Hendison<br \/>\nSubject: Re: Hey<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dave, Scott Hendison handles all this stuff for us offsite so I will send your note to him.
