{"id":2007,"date":"2010-09-16T10:46:35","date_gmt":"2010-09-16T17:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/?p=2007"},"modified":"2014-12-04T13:16:28","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:16:28","slug":"google-missing-malware-notifications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/google\/google-missing-malware-notifications\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Missing Malware Notifications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With 100% certainty, I can say that Google Webmaster Tools Malware warnings are not arriving consistently, and there&#8217;s a breakdown in their system.<\/p>\n<p>In the last two months, there have been three instances where although malware has been found, <strong>no malware notification message ever arrived<\/strong> in the message center at all, despite the fact that they ARE identifying malware.<\/p>\n<p>Since a message never arrives in WMT message center, it never gets forwarded to an email notification you may have set up, so the only way you might find out you have malware is if you stumble across it in the SERPs, or worse, when you get phone calls or emails from your web visitors!<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re really on the ball, and you click into the link your domain, then you see the giant red warning, but it is <strong>NOT sending all of the malware notifications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Today I got a message from a long time (6 yr) web hosting client that they could not get to their domain, and that &#8220;something is wrong&#8221; when they search for their name.<\/p>\n<p>I tried typing in their domain, and saw a warning page in Chrome, which made me realize that it had been compromised in some way.<\/p>\n<p>I know that it&#8217;s just an old Microsoft Front Page site, but rather than visit and get infected, I searched for their name, and there theres that ugly warning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/357da24c56614a969ebe8c31d6d16338.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"274\" height=\"89\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well THAT really ticks be off, because coincidentally, they had a problem a long time ago, so their domain is in my own Webmaster Tools account, and I KNOW that I missed no email, NOR did Heather or Brad .<\/p>\n<p>(Heather is our lead programmer, \u00a0and Brad \u00a0is my friend \/ cohort \/ employee. in fact, he&#8217;s the one that first showed me a Windows computer online with Prodigy in 1992, when I think I called it &#8220;an F-ing stupid waste of time&#8221; )<\/p>\n<h2>Malware Notifications in WMT Message Center<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s every message I&#8217;ve gotten in the past year in my Webmmaster Tools message center&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/ffe0dd0e408049e4be62878a031aec56.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"450\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>The message center is where you usually would see that there&#8217;s a problem, and I see that main screen frequently.<\/p>\n<p>However, when I actually took the time to click INTO A DOMAIN inside Webmaster Tools, (something I might rarely do if I have no reason to), it was a completely different story, \u00a0and CLEARLY there&#8217;s a critical problem!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/23d32e13642249f684ba148b8222a9cd.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"400\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The specific details of what was wrong don&#8217;t matter for this post, and I first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/spyware\/is-your-website-harmful-to-others\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote three years ago<\/a> about how to get cleaned up, the point is that we are relying on notification, Google!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Malware Notification is Critical<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Gmail, we have filters set so that when one of these warnings DOES come, it gets CC&#8217;d to all the parties that need to know.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the sort of email that you can afford to &#8220;miss&#8221; because you weren&#8217;t paying attention, and naturally, you want to know the very second something thats such a business killer gets discovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you REALLY need this happening to your vistors?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/357da24c56614a969ebe8c31d6d16338.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"274\" height=\"89\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just to be sure there wasn&#8217;t something i missed, \u00a0I also looked in Gmail, \u00a0and although the other one was there from September 12, this one was missing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/ac1754b091414151a20c350e2a4b80bd.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"350\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Anyway, we got it cleaned up, and all will be fine, but can you imagine how catastrophic this could be for a very busy site?<\/p>\n<h2>This shouldn&#8217;t be happening, Google<\/h2>\n<p>Are we supposed to assign someone to click into every domain every day, just to make sure we don&#8217;t have malware?<\/p>\n<p>That could be 100&#8217;s or thousands a month for us, on several accounts, and it&#8217;s just impractical &#8211; Here&#8217;s just a snapshot of my own account !<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/dd72708e580d4287bc0846241b6e3e52.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Why can&#8217;t we depend on something as simple and critical as a malware notification?<\/p>\n<p><strong>*** Update Monday morning 9\/20 &#8211; 3 Days Later********<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No changes, so I&#8217;ve now \u00a0submitted a reinclusion request, as opposed to &#8220;just&#8221; the malware review, so maybe this will help?:<\/p>\n<p><em>We are showing a malware warning for visitors, but we received no warning message in Webmaster Tools message center.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\"><em>However, clicking into the domain name inside Webmaster Tools and then to the malware section DOES \u00a0show a warning, but again, nothing in the message center.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\"><em>Visual examination of the site shows we are clean and no files have changed for weeks &#8211; we have verified here &#8211; http:\/\/www.unmaskparasites.com\/security-report\/ . Can you help?<\/em><\/div>\n<p>In another note, there&#8217;s an ongoing problem with another site \u00a0where someone&#8217;s Chrome browser is reportedly showing him a \u00a0&#8220;Warning domainname.com contains elements of domain2.com which appears to host malware.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/imgpics.s3.amazonaws.com\/8bad971f3a964c079d68b041caedd821.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"402\" height=\"104\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve not seen it myself at that domain, and it loads fine for me, but that&#8217;s his screenshot above, so I know he&#8217;s not crazy!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve verified that his domain is also showing no warning in Google Webmaster tools, and there&#8217;s nothing in the message center either, and his test at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmaskparasites.com\/security-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">Unmask Parasites<\/a> comes up clean too.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting&#8230; Let&#8217;s see what happens next!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With 100% certainty, I can say that Google Webmaster Tools Malware warnings are not arriving consistently, and there&#8217;s a breakdown in their system.
