{"id":1713,"date":"2010-02-11T09:47:58","date_gmt":"2010-02-11T16:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/?p=1713"},"modified":"2014-12-04T13:16:35","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T20:16:35","slug":"peak-studios-boulder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/viruses-and-scams\/peak-studios-boulder\/","title":{"rendered":"Peak Studios Boulder Co. | Blackmail Danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I received a &#8220;threatening&#8221; email yesterday from Jeremy Wyss at Peak Studios that I just have to share here after <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/shendison\/status\/8922559578\" target=\"_blank\">posting it last night on Twittter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spurred on by ReTweets from internet marketers like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/todmintz\" target=\"_blank\">Todd Mintz<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/gregboser\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Boser<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/themadhat\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Chronster<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/davidmihm\" target=\"_blank\">David Mihm <\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/chiropractic\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Dorausch<\/a> (OK, sorry, that&#8217;s too much work, but here are <a href=\"http:\/\/search.twitter.com\/search?q=peak+studios\" target=\"_blank\">dozens more<\/a> )\u00a0  I ended up getting over 500 visitors to my old 2008 post from the Retweets alone in one night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"peak-tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peak-tweet1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Now I&#8217;m not <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">really<\/span> the vindictive type, and I&#8217;m not <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">always this<\/span> petty, but God dammit I know when I&#8217;m right, and I&#8217;m not gonna back down here. Besides, it&#8217;s too important that our industry stop &#8220;search marketing firms&#8221;\u00a0 like this from damaging their clients.<\/p>\n<p>Much like some high profile marketers I know of, like\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/shoemoney\" target=\"_blank\">Shoemoney<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/SugarRae\" target=\"_blank\">SugarRae<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/graywolf\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Gray<\/a>, I don&#8217;t\u00a0 generally like to\u00a0 &#8220;call out &#8221;\u00a0 other peoples behavior unnecessarily. But when they totally DESERVE it, or they&#8217;re complete and total idiots, I&#8217;m not afraid to let it rip, and this is one of those times.<\/p>\n<p>Just minutes ago, the &#8220;axe fell&#8221; and this guy emailed the contact info of a bunch of domains he researched, some of which are my clients, some affiliates, (and some I&#8217;ve never even heard of) with a vague, non-specific and unsigned &#8220;warning&#8221; about me.\u00a0 (Score one for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/ johnandrews\" target=\"_blank\">John Andrews<\/a> here by the way, who told me a couple of years ago I was crazy to keep client references showing on my site. Guess you were right, John.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Quick History<\/strong><br \/>\nWay back in October of 2008, Peak Studios sent some badly spun forum spam for their &#8220;search marketing services&#8221;\u00a0 to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sempdx.org\/forum\/\" target=\"_blank\">search marketing forum<\/a> which I&#8217;m a moderator for, over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sempdx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">SEMpdx<\/a>.\u00a0 I thought it was sort of funny, so I Twittered it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1721\" title=\"peaktweet2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peaktweet2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peaktweet2.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peaktweet2-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I phoned Peak,\u00a0 not only didn&#8217;t see anything &#8220;wrong&#8221; with it,\u00a0 he defended it,\u00a0 and didn&#8217;t even see the irony.<em> (Anyone that knows me realizes I believe there&#8217;s a time and place for spam, but that sure wasn&#8217;t it! \ud83d\ude09 <\/em>We hung up sort of agreeing to disagree, and I dropped it, thinking &#8220;this guy just doesn&#8217;t get it&#8221;!\u00a0 <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A couple hours later, this guy, the owner of Peak Studios,\u00a0 actually then phoned the number on the SEMpdx website and spoke to both\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/kentjlewis\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Lewis<\/a> (the past president) AND to <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/blizzle\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Lloyd<\/a> (the current president, where he DEMANDED that I take down my Tweet or else!\u00a0 Seriously!<\/p>\n<p>When Ben told me, I was so ticked off that I wrote a post over at SEMpdx there about the ignorance of\u00a0 the\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sempdx.org\/blog\/spam\/forum-spam-in-eye-of-beholder\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peak Studios forum spam<\/a> activity, titling it &#8220;Spam is in the Eye of the Beholder&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Just to clarify, this is the Peak Studios I&#8217;m referring to&#8230;<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=peak+studios+colorado&amp;hl=en&amp;cd=1&amp;ei=vgn-S_XGK4WItAP0msXPCA&amp;sll=38.764086,-106.567713&amp;sspn=3.014614,4.131605&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;view=map&amp;cid=11836473099819007696&amp;ved=0CEIQpQY&amp;hq=peak+studios+colorado&amp;hnear=&amp;ll=39.967944,-105.248549&amp;spn=0.006295,0.006295&amp;iwloc=A&amp;output=embed\"><\/iframe><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=peak+studios+colorado&amp;hl=en&amp;cd=1&amp;ei=vgn-S_XGK4WItAP0msXPCA&amp;sll=38.764086,-106.567713&amp;sspn=3.014614,4.131605&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;view=map&amp;cid=11836473099819007696&amp;ved=0CEIQpQY&amp;hq=peak+studios+colorado&amp;hnear=&amp;ll=39.967944,-105.248549&amp;spn=0.006295,0.006295&amp;iwloc=A&amp;source=embed\" style=\"color:#0000FF;text-align:left\">View Larger Map<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>That infuriated him of course,\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">a<\/span>nd after a few heated emails with the board, Ben informed him that <strong>the entire SEMpdx board of directors unanimously voted to leave my post up. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ya know what he did then?<\/p>\n<p>Instead of apologizing and perhaps looking within,\u00a0 Quince Wyss, then turned around and left fake negative reviews on the SEMpdx board member Google local business profiles. And this was AFTER 99 % of the internet marketing community pointed out the error of his ways in the <a href=\"http:\/\/sphinn.com\/story\/81142\" target=\"_blank\">comments at Sphinn. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I Lost It<\/strong><br \/>\nThe fake review on my own <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/place?hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;rlz=1B3GGGL_en___US249&amp;newwindow=1&amp;oq=&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=search+commander+oregon&amp;fb=1&amp;gl=us&amp;hq=search+commander&amp;hnear=oregon&amp;cid=9461469816397111045&amp;ei=MpV0S7DSJ4GLnQfu0IW6CQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=local_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1&amp;ved=0CAsQnQIwAA\" target=\"_blank\">Google business profile<\/a> REALLY had me smoked, so I blew up, and phoned him, leaving a screaming and profane voice mail for him that would have made my Dad blush.<\/p>\n<p>What does he do? He edited and cut my voicemail to take out his company name or what I was accusing him of, and anonymously posted on YouTube, trying to make me look like a raving lunatic.\u00a0 (This, &#8220;raving lunatic&#8221; stuff came as no surprise to my wife or anyone that know me, because I was REALLY pissed.)<\/p>\n<p>That recorded voicemail on YouTube sparked me to do some investigative digging into their history\u00a0 so I posted on my own blog in December of 2008 with a backstory and video showing exactly how\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/viruses-and-scams\/peak-studios-actually-harming-clients\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peak Studios was leaving deceptive fake &#8220;bad&#8221; reviews for their clients competitors<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>I still stand behind that post 100%, and my decision to do it, and I was pretty happy to see that it too was supported by the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/sphinn.com\/story\/91634\" target=\"_blank\">Sphinn community<\/a>. Even <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Tamar\" target=\"_blank\">Tamar Weinber<\/a>g from Techipedia thought it was worth mentioning in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techipedia.com\/2008\/social-media-etiquette-handbook\/http:\/\/www.techipedia.com\/2008\/social-media-etiquette-handbook\/http:\/\/www.techipedia.com\/2008\/social-media-etiquette-handbook\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ultimate Social Media Handbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, now you&#8217;re current and up to date,\u00a0 and oh,\u00a0 I forgot to mention that the post is ranking highly for their company name, and that&#8217;s why he contacted me yesterday after 14 months with his &#8220;threat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1723\" title=\"peakthreat\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peakthreat1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peakthreat1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.pdxtc.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/peakthreat1-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to note that from his perspective, the fact that Peak Studios spammed SEMpdx in the first place was is a total non-issue.<\/p>\n<p>The poorly crafted and badly spun articles sent posted in a search marketing organization&#8217;s forum\u00a0 was bad enough, but the fact that they still defend it (below),\u00a0 and that they left us fake reviews for exposing them,\u00a0 and then were (or still are?) leaving damaging reviews for their clients competitors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpermarketingco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">should<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulderinternetmarketing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">be<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parallelpath.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">very<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blizzardinternet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">enlightening<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gahsonay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">to<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinkmango.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">other<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrwebguru.com\" target=\"_blank\">marketers<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulderwebmarketing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">and<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askdavetaylor.com\" target=\"_blank\">bloggers<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seoverflow.com\" target=\"_blank\">in<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperdogmedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>So, instead of being afraid of this supposed &#8220;blackmail threat&#8221;,\u00a0 I&#8217;m sort of proud to have my &#8220;clients&#8221; read the history here, as well as my family, friends, kids, parents, and anyone I ever have contact with, or may possibly in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for the link bait <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/quince-wyss\/8\/82\/312\" target=\"_blank\">Quince<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/jeremy-wyss\/8\/302\/429\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy<\/a>, and yes, I do plead guilty of having an ego &#8211; but I also have the business sense to understand when I&#8217;m wrong, and I&#8217;m man enough to admit it when that happens.<\/p>\n<p>Verbatim and unedited, here it is below&#8230; (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">His stuff is red,<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">mine is blue<\/span> and of course, read from the bottom up for context<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This Email went out today to an unknown number of people &#8211; Unsigned, by the way, from a Gmail address, with all the typos and \u00a0grammatical errors you see below-<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>From:<\/strong> Jeremy.wyss [mailto:jeremy.wyss@gmail.com]<br \/>\n<strong>Sent:<\/strong> Thursday, February 11, 2010 1:03 PM<br \/>\n<strong>To:<\/strong> Scott Hendison &#8211; Search Commander, Inc.<br \/>\n<strong>Subject:<\/strong> Scott hendison is not looking out for your best interests &#8211; recommend contacting him to discuss &#8211; here are the details<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">As a consumer I like to work with companies who always think about my best interest. Scott Hendison has been bashing our company for over a year now and when asked to stop he refused cause of his ego. He thinks it is a game or something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I&#8217;d point out that after my December 2008 post, I really did nothing, and had in fact forgotten all about it. We had given him 24 hours to remove his post that he claims is about us, unfortunately not all of his information is correct <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>(What about the video proof I have for all of my claims on my original post?)<\/em><\/span> and whenever we tried to respond he would not post it, cause he bashed us on his site and wanted everyone to think he was right (again with his ego).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>( I <strong>never <\/strong><\/em><em>deleted or declined approval for any of his comments, and do encourage him to speak his mind here. Anyone can vouch for the fact that I love a good argument, and there&#8217;s no way I&#8217;d delete anything. Why would I? \u00a0With every sentence they write, it makes them look worse and worse! )<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The reason I am telling you this is cause it may have an impact on your company if you continue to work him and he doesn&#8217;t remove the requested items. I can only assume that he is well aware of the fact that the negative online reputation that he is getting, from being so negative towards others, will effect his clients eventually. The problem is that his ego makes him believe that his negative smear campaign against another company has no effect on his company or the companies he associates himself with, probably cause of his God complex. Well in todays world <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">people do look at the companies that people choose to do work with as a marker of their professionalism<\/span><\/em>. I for one would not want anyone to associate myself with a person like Scott who would rather hurt his clients than take 10 seconds to remove something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I would strongly recommend calling him and letting him know that he was hired to look out for your best interests ( not drag your business name through the mud with his) and to remove the items immediately so everyone can go on with their life. In addition, he received this email too and is well aware that I am sending it to you, I guess he really just doesn&#8217;t care about his clients<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>So that went out to clients, UNSIGNED I&#8217;d point out,\u00a0 with no links at all, or an explanation of anything. He even sent it from a cowardly Gmail address. How does this &#8220;hurt&#8221; me or my clients again? Unfortunately, there was no disclaimer that said if you are on the board of sempdx please post and reply to people here. I was the one who posted the <strong>two<\/strong> blog comments and I never reposted them I edited them. Instead of being an adult and just clicking deleting them you decided to call and argue with Quince. We manage blogs too Scott,it is easy to just click a button or even better you don&#8217;t allow posts to go public until reviewed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You saying I would not work this guy cause of this message is spam as you interpret it on your post, have you read what you wrote on our reviews?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Oh we know what we did towards you was not right I am the first to admit it, but we did it in retaliation for your comments about us on sempdx, your site and google maps along with your little social networking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">finally your vague answer to my question is wonderful, so you don&#8217;t care if you negatively effect your clients income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You can look at it this way is it worth your time and energy to deal with the ramifications it is going to bring to you if you don&#8217;t remove it?
