Google’s New Results Format

7th August 2006

If you’ve searched for anything over the weekend, you may have noticed some new formatting on Google for the number one result, where they’re showing (after the ad of course) the top ranked site, then 5 more one line listings right below it for that same domain.

What is this, and why are they doing it?

I think the number one spot is already competitive enough without Google blowing out number two three and four to below the fold.

What makes a website authoritative enough to get these coveted extra listings that will knock your competition down a notch or two? They’re not advertisements, and they’re not showing up for most searches, so what’s the deal?

There’s so much to learn, but unfortunately, I’ve got a ton of work to do. I’m sure someone will explain it on their blog soon enough…

*update* - While it’s not explained, I see it mentioned on Greywolfs SEO blog this morning, where he also points out that listing number two can be from the same domain as listing number 1 and the 5 mini listings.
