iGoogle - the ‘I’ is for ‘Irritating’

3rd May 2007

I wish I had been taking screenshots of Google’s homepage, search results pages, the logged in homepage, webmaster central and all of the different Google areas that have been changing so much over the past two weeks.

Lots and lots of cool stuff,  to be sure, but as of a couple of days ago, it seems that they have permanently adopted the the name iGoogle.

Anytime you’re logged into your personalized homepage, the Google logo, how now has a small italicized I in front of it.

The I apparently is supposed to stand for “individual”, which has something to do with their “commitment” to personalized search apparently, which I hate.

As I’ve ranted before personalized search needs to be an option that I can simply turn off if I want to without losing my web history, and without being forced to sign out of Google.

WebProNews has a great article on exactly why personalized search sucks, and I feel that it perfectly sums up the problems that I have with it.

HEY Google, unless I can simply check a box in my preferences to turn off personal search,  your new name, “IGoogle” just stands for irritating.
