While I wouldn’t exactly call it “high speed”, the Portland City Council and Mayor Tom Potter announced that they have chosen the company MetroFi to provide 1 meg wireless internet to Portland residents at no charge.Â
That’s faster than many peoples DSL, and almost as fast as the high speed data service offered by cellular companies Sprint and Verizon.
The service will be advertising based, to help offset the costs, but people may choose to spend $20 a month to get the service “ad free”. According to Mobile Tech News, all 134 square miles of Portland will be blanketed with this service. Wow!
I’m sure Verizon and Sprint are pretty happy about this growing trend among cities, after they spent tens of millions of dollars to bring EVDO all over the United States…

The “free” version topped by a constant ad banner will not be at that speed. It will be 80% slower. Slow access AND ads in your way.
What a bargain!
