Gphone - Google Phone - Android - I Want One

5th November 2007

Nearly a year and a half ago I mentioned the Google phone was coming, and to everyone’s surprise, it has taken incredibly long.

There’s been a lot of speculation in the industry over the past few weeks that it’s coming any time now, and it looks like the day is almost here. I’ve been putting off buying a new phone for quite awhile now. I’m relatively happy with my Blackberry, but when the iPhone came out, I was pretty floored by some of the capabilities. Zooming in on Google maps is highly cool, but its lack of a tactile keyboard kept me from taking the plunge.

About two hours ago Google posted this video online at YouTube, that gives a clearer explanation of what it is, what it’s going to do, what to expect, and how they hope it will change our lives. To be perfectly clear, it’s not a phone, it’s an operating system, that is going to be available for multiple handsets, on multiple carriers, and the open source aspect should be an incredible opportunity - iPhone better watch out.

As they put it in the video, it’s going to be the “catalyst for innovation…”

*update 11/2007 - Google removed the video, so I’ve removed it from here… sorry ;(

  1. iPhone Seller Says:

Wow. Sounds great. I was just looking at a book about iPhones yesterday that described all of it’s features and thinking it may be worth getting. Now I have an excuse to hold off.

The video is gone already :(

  2. Scott Says:

Wow, I wonder why the video is gone? I’ll search to see if it’s elsewhere…
Hmm, they seem to have removed all reference to it also, and I can’t find it in search. Odd.

  3. Google Phone Seller Says:

Looks like they are predicting the Google phone will be out next year.

I think the Google cell phone was likely to have been the best wireless handset in history. If you agree, then you may be disappointed. The prototypes exist, but not the phone.

I’m guessing, you will probably never see a Google cell phone on the market. In fact, as much as I love Google, I’m also guessing here, but I think the threat of a Google cell phone by itself, brought handset manufacturers and wireless providers to the bargaining table.

While these companies have been at odds with Google up until very recently, now they are among the 30 technology companies Google is working with to develop the Open-Source Application Programming Interface (API) known as Android for wireless handsets.

The API is really just what it sounds like. It is, simply put, what the software guys use to make all the cool applications we buy and use everyday.

I highly recommend checking out the You Tube Video about Android. It was posted 4 days ago, on November 11th.

This video is introduced by the Google founder. Android Demo from Google

I’m telling you this is huge right now. There are over 3 billion cell phones in use worldwide.

Google wants the space on our cell phone screens to sell advertising space.

Good for them. I would too.

And, Check it out! They are setting aside 10 million dollars as prizes the top software applications.

    Hi,

As you say, Sergey Brin is somewhat stronger in his terms that it is not about GPhone. It is about software “Android”.

Well, lots of OS there for phones. But Android is going to be definitely different. simply because, it is Open source. Oh yes, just like linux got a big market pie, Android will do.

But most of the people expect to have a perfect flavour of Android from Google only. We know there will be lots of flavours in near future of Android. The Android from Google only will make the product survive. Well, it is something like Redhat , openbsd etc. Although there are lots of OS linux out there, for servers we use only certain exclusive Linux flavours.

In the same way, our future phones will have Google OS in it, :) i mean Android in it.

I expect the the day with my friends, all having same gadgets with different flavor of Android in it, that is a cool day,

  7. Android Phone Says:

Android has a lot of potential. I want to buy a new phone and I was thinking about the iPhone too, but the problem with it are those little tings that annoy me, for example MMS (HOW STUPID IS IT NOT HAVING THAT?) and the 3G thing. Meizu M8 (iPhone Clone) looks great but still, it is with Windows Mobile 6 and I’m not sure I would like to have one of those at least not until WM 7. I think I will wait a little for Android in July and see what will happen.
